| | Dear Mr. President,
My name is Yahaira and I am a freshman in college. Coming from illegal immigrant parents, I was unable to take advantage of a $36,000 scholarship to Baylor University due to the fact that my parents would not be able to afford the rest of my tuition. I went to the University of Houston my first semester, but since my dad was laid off, I am now attending a community college and I am not even sure if I will be able to attend school in the fall. Since I was also born in Mexico, I was denied any type of financial aid. I cannot get a job due to my status. I graduated 12 out of 480 students, but apparently that does not matter when you do not have those valid nine numbers. You promised to do something about immigration issues in your first 100 days of presidency. We have been living here for the past twelve years and we are still being treated like criminals. Haitians are now being given citizenship due to the earthquake, but is it necessary to wait for a major disaster to help those who contribute to this country and who pay taxes? WE are the ones who have to do those jobs that no one else is willing to do! They're is no American Dream for those who are here illegally, not even if all we do is contribute to this nation. God created us all equal, legal or not, we are all the same in the eyes of God and no nation should deny any privileges to those who want to succeed. I hope that you will understand my exasperation for my dream is to one day become a pediatric oncologist and work at M.D. Anderson. |
